Is It Possible To Find A New Job With The Help Of Networking?
Written by Author on November 14th, 2009For a number of people, networking still seems to be like something that will only work for others. I am sure they are wrong. My friend wasn’t unique and connected in any specific way, with the exception of several positions he found by direct mail advertising, he networked his way into every other position as he worked his way up the company’s steps in different industries. He has some examples of how he worked with the people he knew to find the jobs he needed.
He was talking with his faculty advisor about vacancies just before the graduation. Advisor gave him the contacts of a man at a trade association that by coincidence was near his home. He visited him on the way home from college. He referred my friend to the Chief at a nearby company that fit exactly with what my friend was eager to do. So, they hired him. The job, as you see, was never advertised.
A vendor salesman used to call the company where my friend worked for coming to work for the consortium. Salesman informed him they were looking for the engineers with business ability and gave my friend the contacts of the hiring manger. So, he’s got the job. The job also was not advertised in this case. When he had gone as far as he could in that company, he sent out hundreds of resumes and answered advertisements without success. Finally he found his new job with the help of networking.
Once, my friend decided to work for himself. He searched companies involved in the life insurance industry and knew several agents. His good acquaintance who was also an agent led him to his company where he eventually filled his first position. Company had great recruiting program and the personal introduction played a great role, even though he had no obvious qualifications.
Several years later when my friend decided to change his career again, he networked his way into a local, major pharmaceutical company establishing business development. Even in this case the job was not advertised.
Several years later, the company was making its restructure to prepare for a large advancement of the division my friend worked in. He was stopped his former position and networked his way to a job as program manager with the same company. This position was not advertised until after he began only to fulfill his HR requirements.
Some years later it was time for my friend to move on further. He networked his way to find a job of a manager in some other division. This position was advertised and my friend saw it on the board of ads. But he thought it was not the best chance. He continiued networking his way into the vice president’s office. Vice president encouraged my friend to apply and asked him to meet with the hiring manger of the company.
