Get Useful Information Small Business

Written by Author on March 17th, 2009

The definition of small business can be constructed based on numbers (annual sales, number of employees, etc.), or based on subjective observation of a business size (size of your office, how many jets you have, etc.). It is up to you what a small business is. To me a small business is one that I can handle all by myself, but this is simply my own subjective view of the matter. However, the fact that you start small does not determine how big or small your business will become in terms of profits, but it is unquestionable that if you simply choose not to make money you will remain small regardless of the potential of your business.

How much your business grows is more a matter of the business model model you have chosen, rather than the amount of cash you put upfront to make it happen, and then of course how much will and effort you add to the mix in order to develop your business. Start small, and go big (not in size, but in profits), my kind of business. When I say start small I really mean tiny, not $100,000 not $10,000, I mean $200 small.

Do you have a deskful of “papers” or a screenful unanswered or unresolved emails?

Make A Time
Sometimes, you simply don’t have time to discuss an issue raised by an employee.

Refer It
If you can’t discuss it within 24 hours, do two things. Find out if the issue can wait. If it can, make an appointment. If it can’t, refer it.

Insist On A Recommendation
Ensure that staff always, yes always, suggest a course of action when they bring a problem to you.

Report Back Always
Whatever the outcome of your meeting or discussion, set a time for the employee to report back to you. Your staff will never learn to do their jobs properly if you do their jobs or even parts of their jobs.

The Potential Disaster
Occasionally something needs your instant attention. Involve the employee. Make sure the original employee, and others if necessary, participate in reaching resolution.

Conclusion
I’m not suggesting that you “cop out” and dump everything on your staff. In those days we had a name for the actions I’m suggesting. True, sometimes avoiding issues will make them go away, but think about the energy you expend and the time you waste.

If you’re like me, when there’s an issue that needs taking care of, it will keep popping it’s ugly little self into your brain. Take care of this issue!

Problem is, each time you look at your to do list you say, “Yep, I still have that item pending. What if you are procrastinating about several issues?
