Post Doctorate Research Opportunities
Sabbaticals are amazing opportunities for tenured professors and graduate students alike to undertake paid research in a foreign place, often overseas, while retaining their positions within their regular research facility.

More specifically a research sabbatical is generally available to professionals undertaking post doctoral research work. Most sabbaticals involve a desire to fullfil a specific goal for example to see a specific place, undertake specific research or to write a book. Paid sabbaticals are an academic perk provided by research facilities that employee scientists, doctors and/or academics. These opportunities are usually offered after a period of tenure and when the post doctorate researcher has a particular course of research they wish to pursue.

Other criteria for those wishing to undertake a post doctoral research sabbatical often include consistently high performance standards, successful post doctorate research as proven by an academic record and the applicant having presented a promising research proposal that requires an in-depth study.

The University of Oslo’s criteria for a post doctorate research sabbatical is as follows:
1.The University assesses based upon seniority, the project description and the quality and the benefit of the post doctorate research sabbatical to the applicant, group or institute.

2.The sabbatical is conditional upon arrangements made for teaching and supervision of masters and doctoral students.

3.Sabbaticals are restricted to staff under the age of 65.

4.The institute gives priority to grant applications for residence abroad.

5.Before consideration the Faculty must have a project description of at least three pages, an invitation from the hosting institution and the total sum applied for along with a budget.

6.The rates applied for are adjusted in accordance with the Research Council’s rates. Other expenses, such as research expenses or extra journeys home, must be submitted to the institute. Likewise, shorter sabbatical periods abroad and/or at a Norwegian institution, can only be funded by the institute.

7.The Faculty finalizes the applications and sends letters of acceptance to the individual applicants, with copies to the institute. It is up to the institute to provide supplementary grants to cover eventual shortfalls between the amounts applied for and the amounts awarded.

8.The grant is paid as a scientific stipend, before departure.

That gives a fairly comprehensive idea of what the standard criteria and process is for post doctorate research applicants wanting consideration for a sabbatical. Some post doctorate research institutes advertise for sabbatical spaces and these can be found either through research facilities or from online research job sites like ResearchNetwork.com. Because an invitation from an institute is often a prerequisite for a post doctoral research sabbatical grant, finding an institute is a priority within the process and job sites like this are often instrumental in putting those institutes in touch with those postdoc fellows looking for a sabbatical experience.
