Enter the captcha code and click the button get keyword ideas. The information will be in several columns. Google does a pretty good job of providing related searches too. We want the information under the global column for a good average of numbers. This figure tells us how many times a term is searched per month during the last year. I do not bother with anything less than 1000 searches a month. usually less than that is not worth the time but this is up to you.
Next I like to click the add button for each of the keywords that I want to check for competition. Do not waste time on searches under 500. Do not waste your time with anything less then that. You can also click the link that says global monthly search volume and this will toggle the keywords with the most searches to the top. I would not be concerned with any other data right now. I would select the ones that look good by placing the check mark next to them.
What is really nice is that Google will take your selected terms and download them into a text file for you.

We are looking for an average under 3.0 for a good keyword to target. Trash everything else. .

Find a word or phrase that is being searched for at least 1000 per month and make sure the top ten sites do not have an average page rank of over 3.0.
